Projection fetishism, the SAT would make a worthy subject for research on the prevalence of screenology in "technological arts". (what art is made without technology? What message exists without medium? Noumenon and phenomenon.)

Comments

A screen is a tool to block your sight, your light, the heat.

• a fixed or movable upright partition used to divide a room, to give shelter from drafts, heat, or light, or to provide concealment or privacy.
• a thing providing concealment or protection : his jeep was discreetly parked behind a screen of trees.

A screen from a blocking tool became an interface in the electronics world. I found that mesmerizing. And reversing to the initial meaning, I always wonder what do we communicate, mediate with screen as much as I wonder what do we block.

(Again, my silly thoughts…)

mouains, not interested in the etymology and various definitions of the word screen, but rather in the concept of projection (onto or from screens).

That "Devices of Design" symposium at the CCA two years ago had a fantastic presentation by the dean of architecture of Colombia University. I really loved one slide in particular where we shown an engraving from the early Renaissance showing how the Light of God, Creativity, shines *through* the artist and is projected onto the page... :)

(Don't be too literal. It's the idea that counts. :)

I was not talking about etymology either :)
(Don't be too much on control. It's the imagination that counts ;) )

hihi, funny, this is one of the points along the freedom/control axis where we diverge in opinion. Communication is about a certain amount of control. Misinterpretation and over interpretation have the same effect: the message is lost.

I have a certain meaning in mind. You are of course free to give free reign to your imagination, and I am of course always happy to hear the fruits of that. But at the same time, I am trying to communicate something and given the opportunity to rectify your course of interpretation, to help assure you get what I am saying, I will guide you along with a bit of "control of the message".

Afterall, we need to agree to standards of language and meaning to undertsand each other. ;)

Your interpretation was welcome, I just wished to eek along my meaning.

:D

Hey, don't forget the original screen. As light reflects nature and then back though your lens, it burns an image on the back of your brain. That is all the metaphor you need to understand the idea at hand. Well... thats the way I SEE it. HaHa
