Swimming treadmill

Posted by bopuc at March 20, 2003 02:11 PM

This is an example of one of those things which you'd never have thought of in a million years (and evidently no one had) until you see it and you smack yerself on the forhead and think: "duh.. of course..."

Genius.

Comments

They've been advertising those in the back of Harper's and such for a long time. Smaller indoor versions, actually.

One thing you need to keep in mind is that you have to be a very good swimmer to use one of these. In a regular pool, slight fluctuations in your effort have no real effect, but if you slow down for a stroke or two in one of these treadmill things you'll find yourself pushed against the back of the pool, and requiring a large effort to get going again.

...or so I reckon, since I'm a lousy swimmer and have never used one of these. But if you think about it, it's the same effect as if you slow down on a walking treadmill -- you get flung off. But keeping a steady pace while walking or running is much easier than keeping a steady pace while swimming.

Absolutely true... and.. wasn't it with you at the end of the last YULblog dinner perhaps, that we had a good laugh about treadmills?

I wonder though, how this pool swould "fling you off"... sort of like a flying fish I imagine... ejection?

(Kidding of course. ;)
