When the money comes knocking, egotism answers.

Flickr patents "Interestingness".
Media objects, such as images or soundtracks, may be ranked according to a new class of metrics known as "interestingness." These rankings may be based at least in part on the quantity of user-entered metadata concerning the media object, the number of users who have assigned metadata to the media object, access patterns related to the media object, and/or a lapse of time related to the media object.
Sorry guys. I am officially revolted. Peh.
An awesome bit of code, for sure. A great idea, no doubt. An idea that needs to be "protected" and hoarded and kept from anyone else benefitting from? Hmmmm... hooray for progress!
Peh. Lame, lame, lame.

That is so lame.
I mean, when people Digg site, aren't they effectively "ranking the site at least in part on the quantity of user-entered metadata concerning the media object, the number of users who have assigned metadata to the media object, access patterns related to the media object, and/or a lapse of time related to the media object"?
That's a terribly broad-based definition, as all patents issued these days.
Peh indeed.

Wow, that's really disappointing. Thanks a lot Y!

Pretty much ... patenting this sort of thing is super-frivolous. Measures of relative goodness has been done a gazillion times, based on a raft of inputs - metadata, comments, clicks, diggs, links, votes, views, citations, GPA, SATs, etc.
Patent appears to still be pending, but COME ON.

So that's where the Polish word "koszmar" (nightmare) comes from.
